Hi,
Awesome, I wish I could also visit Semarang - where my great great grandfather was originally from and where HAMKA made it an important place in his legendary "Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck". Anyway, let me try answering your question (who knows if I am lucky enough):
1. 3 must visit places - (a) Simpang Lima: known as the heart of the city of Semarang where you should be able to see, feel and smell; (b) Taman Budaya Raden Saleh, Jalan Sriwijaya No.29; (c) Sam Po Kong Temple, Jl. Simongan No. 129.
2. Since Simpang Lima is known as the heart of Semarang, it would be interesting to just capture the essence of the place itself - be it the people, the faces, the activities and the colours available for travelers to wonder. As for visiting Taman Raden Saleh, it is known for historical, arts and cultural presentation. Perhaps an observation to the Wayang Wong Ngesti Pandowo could be reflected differently on your photo to show the unique side of Javanese drama performance.
**Hope the above is enough. Have fun in Semarang.
Feeq, below are some place that you should visit during your trip in Semarang. Don't miss it!
Sam Po Kong (Gedung Batu)
This was built in honour of the Muslim Chinese Great Admiral Zheng He who visited the area in 1405 who visited Semarang in the early 15th century. It is located on Jl. Simongan No. 129 and was extensively renovated in 2006 to celebrate the 600th anniversary of Cheng Ho’s voyage to Semarang.
Chinatown
This is one of my favourite places. It is a maze of gangs (alleyways) that intertwine, run parallel and go each other way to confuse you pleasantly. You could spend hours here exploring the markets, seeing the smaller temples or enjoying some genuine Chinese cuisine at one of the many warungs.
Lawang Sewu (A Thousand Doors)
Located on Jl Pemuda it was originally built as the headquarters of the local railway company During World War II, the building was used as the Japanese army’s headquarter. The building has a U-shaped design from which numerous doors open. When I visited the place it was barracked by Indonesian soldiers, however, the building is now empty and in a dilapidated state, Lawang Sewu is considered to be one of Semarang’s most prominent landmark and, as rumour has it, haunted.
Tay Kak Sie Temple
This beautiful temple is one of the oldest and largest Chinese temples in Semarang and was built in 1771. I actually spent a half day here mesmerised by the heavily incense-filled room. You can find it on Gang Lombok, a small alley that runs off Jl Pekojan near the river. It is often known as a ‘living temple’ for reasons unknown to me and I really should have asked the monks there. Interestingly this temple is used not only by Bhuddists but Taoists and Confucianists as well.
Firdaus, there are some places recomended 4 u:
u can go to semawis... which is only in weekend in Semarang. Actually it seems like jonker walk in Mellaca. So you can try all the food, locally taste and locally price as well.
Sam Po Kong
one of historical chinese temple, chinese ornament and building. Besides, got huge Cheng Ho's statue.
Lawang sewu (pintu seribu/thousands doors)Located in tugu muda semarang and it is nearby Katedral Church, so u can take a shoot one on one location.
More tips, you have to change your Ringgit to Rupiah... Since there a few money changer in Semarang. Even in Nilai got more money changer than in Semarang... :D
Congrats, u are the winner =)
